Got a Little Creative!

My youngest daughter decided that she would like her room repainted for her 16th birthday.  While I LOVED the idea of saving some money, there was much to be done before painting could commence.  She and I made a deal.  Her father and I would paint her room as long as she cleaned and decluttered A LOT.  She got right to work.  One of the things that she wanted to throw away was this bench that she had made in 7th grade.

I was ABSOLUTELY not going to 'throw it away' and I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it.  It was going to become a Read to Someone bench in my classroom.  So then I got right to work.  So far, I've only primed it and painted it white.
I'm between ideas for the rest of it.  I used to paint B.C. (before children) but it's been quite awhile...20 years to be exact!  I've never used Mod Podge before but I've heard good things about it.  I just don't know if it would hold up to being sat on and stepped by many children.  Anybody have any good advice?

Classroom Photos

Here in my part of the country, we are starting school on Monday...pending the hurricane, of course!  My room is ready and I finally took some pictures to share with all of you.  Before I do, though, I really want to thank ALL of you fabulous teachers out there.  Your blogs, ideas and insights are so wonderful and exciting.  I can't wait to start the year!

That's pretty much the gist of my room.  I just realized that I don't have any 'whole room' pictures, just close-ups, but you get the idea.  I'm very jealous of many of your entrance displays.  We are not allowed to hang things in the hallway so it looks VERY blah!  Here's to a wonderful school year to everybody.  Feel free to ask questions or leave a comment.  Thanks!

Top 3 Linky Party

Simply 2nd Resources is hosting a Top 3 Linky Party.  What are the top 3 things that I want to work on this year?  I'm not sure I could stop at 3!  But here goes...

1.  Guided Math - My district decided not to go with a math program last year and it was disastrous.  Although, I do agree that what we had was not meeting the state standards and a change was necessary.  The difficult part was that we were given the standards and a timeline that was mandatory...that's it.  While we all made it through, I decided that it was not good enough so I read Debbie Diller's Math Work Stations.  What an awesome read!  I knew it was exactly what I needed and I hope that I can make it work for the students AND for my sanity!
Math Work Stations: Independent Learning You Can Count On, K-2

2. Technology - I was fortunate enough to obtain an old SmartBoard.  I don't care care how old it is, I'm just SOOO happy to have one!  I took a SmartBoard class this summer and I can't wait to use the lessons I've both purchased and created.  The Smart Lesson Stop has wonderful lessons.

3.  Morning Meeting - Never did it but I have been inspired by Christina Bainbridge and really want to give it a try.  Check out her site for more information.  She's a fantastically organized teacher!

About Me

Hello and welcome to my blog!  My name is Dianne and I have been teaching for 21 years.  My experience ranges from Resource to Self-Contained to DPT to First Grade and finally Second Grade.  When I landed in Second grade, I knew it was my favorite place.  Don't get me wrong, I've loved ALL of my jobs but not like this.  I've been in second for 16 years now - Wow!
Besides teaching, I have many other loves.  First is my husband.  We've been happily married for 21 years.  He is my friend and my life.  We have three beautiful children, two girls and a boy that range in age from 16 to 20.  Two are in college and my youngest is a junior in highschool.  We are truly blessed by our children.  They have always made us proud and all three are very family-oriented (which, of course, I LOVE!).  We have two dogs - a shihtoodle named Moose and a dachsund mix named Ember.  Ember is completely deaf and our youngest daughter convinced us to rescue her.  It has been an amazing experience for all of us.
I have many hobbies as well.  Reading is my all-time, absolute favorite thing to do.  Blogging is running a close second these days...  I also enjoy scrapbooking, painting and walking.  That's my life in a nutshell.  Talk to you soon!

Kleinspiration Giveaway!

Erin Klein of Kleinspiration is giving away a $25 Target gift card.  Who doesn't LOVE their dollar section!?  I sure do!  Check out her blog to see how to enter.

New Blog Design

I have to post a shout out to Kristen at Ladybug Teaching Resources.  She is the amazing designer of my brand new blog!  Don't you just LOVE it?!  Thanks, Kristen!  Now if I could only figure out how to 'grab buttons' and create 'linky parties'...  I guess I'll head over to Kristen's other blog called Ladybug's Teacher Files to watch her video tutorials - another awesome resource!

Daily 5 Management

As I'm reading all of the wonderful blogs that I follow, I noticed that there was a D5 & CAFE conference somewhere.  I though I would add the labels that I made to help manage their D5 choices.  The inspiration came from Mrs. Bainbridge and the graphics, of course, are ThistleGirl Designs.  I just tweaked my labels to match my classroom.

Now...I've never added a document before so I'm going to try my best...hopefully it works!

Daily 5 Labels

I did it!  I figured out Google Docs!  Files import much better as a PDF...who knew!
