Guinea pig number 3?

Hi Friends! Well, I'm about three weeks into being a guinea pig mom and I already feel super protective about them. Here's what happened...

At Petco, you have 15 days to return a pet if necessary. Well, at about day 8, I noticed a lump in poor Cindy Lou's throat. I waited a few more days, watching it closely and hoping that it would go away.   It didn't (poor little thing!) so on day 12, we took a trip to Petco.

Cindy Lou

Daisy came with us so Cindy Lou wouldn't be so afraid.  Heather (from Petco) took a look at her and said she needed to be seen by the vet.  Heather told me that I could get a phone call after she was evaluated and choose to take her back if I wanted.  I said yes, of course.  She then proceeded to let me know that Petco would not operate on small animals because the success rate was so slim.  They would either put her down or if she wasn't suffering, I could take her home to die comfortably.  What!?!  I couldn't believe what they were saying.  I reaffirmed that I wanted the phone call and wanted to take her home if that was a choice.  Heather said that they would keep her until the vet could see her.  They refunded my money for Cindy Lou.  :(  Daisy, my daughter and I went home with tears in our eyes.  How could we be so attached in just a couple of weeks?!

Anyway, we decided that Daisy was lonely and we should get another guinea pig so we could start socializing her.  I promised the kids that their class pets would be there the Monday after vacation.  And now, I only had a week to get the new guinea pig ready for second graders.  Off we went and found Lilly.  She's smaller than Daisy but not by much.  She is also much squirmier when being held but she's super cute.

So my plan became that Daisy and Lilly would go to school and Cindy Lou (if we got her back) would live out her days at home.  Perfect, right? WRONG!  I only had one cage!  What was I thinking?  I couldn't bring Cindy Lou to school and let the kids watch her die.  But I also couldn't buy another whole set up.  The first cage and accessories were from the Pets in the Classroom grant.  I already spent some of my own money, more than I should have but I wanted two piggies.  I can not buy another cage and accessories for a temporary situation.  I couldn't afford it even if I wanted to.  I promised my husband, whom I love dearly but he is just not an animal person, that the guinea pigs would not be a bother.  It's killing me but I had to say to Cindy Lou. :' (

And then Petco called...

They were shocked!  The vet diagnosed her with an abscess (sp?).  They lanced it, put her on heavy antibiotics and said she would be just fine in a week or so.  Oh my God!  Please, please tell me that three guinea pigs can fit in this cage?  Heather said, 'No way.'  If I want Cindy Lou back, I would have to pay for her again because she's okay.  I am so torn!  I don't want to return Lilly but I can't accommodate three piggies.  Oh my word...this is so hard!

Names At Last!

Well, it took some doing but we finally have names for our new, furry little friends.  Maybe it's because Dr. Seuss' birthday is coming soon or maybe it's because commercials for The Lorax have been all over the television...I'm not really sure.  But their names are officially Daisy (after Daisy-Head Maisy) and Cindy Lou (yup, that adorable little girl from The Grinch).  Only, the tiny guinea pig is Daisy and the chunka munka is Cindy Lou.  That feels a little backwards to me but it is what it is.  We all love them both!

Well, I have finally found the perfect little piggies for my classroom!  They are so adorable...I already LOVE them!  I had no idea it would be so difficult to get two female guinea pigs.  They had to be female because I was told that the males get territorial and will fight.  So it was either one male or two females.  What to do?  Well, given the fact that I am never satisfied with just one of anything (like when I find a great pair of jeans -  I have to buy 2 or 3 pairs!) so I decided on two females.  My daughter and I drove around to all of the local Petco stores last Saturday and every store only had one female.  The closest store said they were getting 8 females in on Wednesday so I drove straight there after my staff meeting and guess what?  Only ONE left!  I couldn't believe it.  So I spent my entire prep period yesterday calling Petco stores that weren't so local.  Finally, one said they had 5 females.  I practically sped there after work and found these two little cuties.  Actually, one of them is a chunka munka...but oh so cute!  I don't have names for them yet.  We will be doing that in school today.  My only rules with the kids were that the names had to be book characters and they had to make sense (to me, of course).  So I'll be back when the piggies have been named to do a proper introduction.  In the meantime, I wanted you all to see my new babies.  :)

Beyond Excited!!!

Guess what?!  I secretly applied for a Pets in the Classroom grant on Jan. 4th (with my principal's permission, of course).   We received approval this past Wednesday.  For those of you that are not familiar with Pets in the Classroom, it's super easy.  If you are thinking about a pet, you definitely need to check it out.  There are four grant types, including: 1- Rebate Grants in the amounts of $100 (for small animal or birds) or $150 (for reptiles or fish) for purchases at any pet store; 2- the Sustaining Grant in the amount of $50 to maintain an existing classroom pet; 3- Petco Grant, which provides coupons for the live animal, pet habitat and supplies purchased at Petco; and 4- a Petsmart Grant, which provides coupons for the live animal, pet habitat and supplies purchased at Petsmart.

My kiddos and I are so excited!  I had already decided on a guinea pig but now I'm thinking two guinea pigs - two girls to be exact.  From what I've read, the males get territorial as adults.  I've already sent home an allergy and permission to hold/touch letter.  The packet should be in tomorrow morning and then I am off to find our furry, little friends!  Can you tell how anxious I am to get started?  :)

When I find the perfect little babies for our classroom, I'll post some pictures for you to see.  If anyone has any tips or advice, I'd love for you to leave a comment.  Thanks for sharing my excitement!
